Trial Worldwide

Havana, Cuba

Many thanks to Caridad Soler Morejón, Presidenta del Comité NEURO 2001 who arranged for the CRASH Trial
to be presented at the International Congress on Neurointensivism, July 2001 in Havana City. The CRASH Trial was included in the main programme for the meeting,
and a dedicated CRASH trial meeting followed this.
We were delighted to meet so many Cuban and South American doctors who are keen to take part,

while being joined by doctors from Argentina and Spain who are already actively recruiting patients into the trial. Caridad Soler and her team at Centro de Investigaciones Médico Quirúrgicas (CIMEQ) already have Scientific Committee approval to take part and are now finalising Ethical approval. The team is now familiar with the practicalities of taking part and is keen to get going! Many other centres in Cuba are also in the process of applying for approval throughout the island. We are very proud that Dr Soler has taken on the role of ‘National Co-ordinator’ for Cuba and is now actively promoting the trial and encouraging as many centres as possible to take part. We look forward to strong collaboration!!

Patient Entry Database

Sue Ellis is a Clinical Audit Officer in the Accident & Emergency Department at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, UK. She helps to monitor recruitment in the CRASH Trial and to ensure that the early outcome forms are completed on time. Sue

created a database to store information about patients enrolled. Each week she enters the data from the Patient Entry forms for patients enrolled the previous week. She makes a record of which hospital the patient is transferred to, and updates this if the patient is moved. At 14 days, Sue ensures that an Early Outcome form is completed for each patient and sends them to the CRASH Co-ordinating Centre.
We were so impressed with Sue’s system that we decided to copy her database design and make it available for any collaborators who would like to use it. The database can be downloaded from the CRASH website, or alternatively by contacting the CRASH Co-ordinating Centre. Thanks Sue!
We would like to hear from you if you have created any ingenious systems to help you deal with trial matters. Do share your ideas with the other collaborators. You are also welcome to send other contributions about the CRASH Trial in your hospital for the newsletter.

.. Weekly Fax
Some of you may already be familiar with the update we send by fax every Friday. We thought it was time for a change, and have now introduced two new faxes:
  • Highest recruiters in the last three months lists collaborators who have enrolled more than five patients in the last three months
  • Early Outcome Form data 100% complete lists collaborators who have sent all early outcome forms due during the last three months
